Arms Are More Than Gold

Still, one-fifth of the Russians continue to work in arms plants. The plant in Izhevsk that manufactures Kalashnikovs and the plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur that makes Su planes employ as much as 70 percent of the local workforces.

Competition heats up on world market
Austria's recent refusal to admit MiG-29s to a tender for fighter aircraft for its air force, like Hungary's decision to buy F-16s rather than modernize its MiGs, has again confirmed an important trend. Russian arms exporters are meeting tougher competition from other, mainly Western, producers.
