Family of Perspective "Angara" Carrier Missile

The growing demand for the final space activity products and services quickly increases the demand for the different means of spacecraft delivery to the orbit. In the next years Russia will have to make intensive efforts to hold its leading positions of the national space industry in the world. Currently used Russian carrier rockets will be most probably changed by the perspective carrier missiles of "Angara" family that are being developed by "Khrunichev" State Space Scientific-Industrial Center. The project by "Khrunichev" Center is based on exploitation economy reached, in contrast of the other offers, through the usage of high-efficient and environment-friendly fuel (oxygen plus hydrogen) on the second stage and the boost unit. This version exceeded the competing offers with specific take-off cost approximately by one third.

The preliminary "Angara" project was introduced for the first time in Le Bourget exhibition in 1995. The marketing researches conducted by "Khrunichev" Center detected the considerable demand as for the small satellites as for the medium and the heavy ones in the period till 2016.

The analysis of the space programs by the leading space equipment producers shows that now a disposable modular carrier rocket is the most optimal and actual solution for the effective expansion on the market. In the middle of 1998 RSA and the Defense Ministry accepted the Center's proposal to develop light, medium and heavy class rockets based on the universal rocket module. The light class "Angara-1.1." and "Angara-1.2." missiles, the middle class - "Angara-3I" and "Angara-4I", the heavy class - "Angara-5I" and "Angara-4E" were determined as the basic versions of the family. Besides the mentioned versions "Khrunichev" Center is capable to construct 19 different modifications what proves the advantage of the modular construction conception.

The "Angara" missile launches are to be conducted in Plesetzk from 2003 using the ground infrastructure designed for the "Zenit-2" rockets. If the launch complex in Plesetzk isn't finished in time the first launch of the light class "Angara" is plannned in Baikonur. Besides Plesetzk "Khrunichev" Center also considers equatorial launching sites that can promote more effective commercial exploitation of the "Angara" missiles.

As the "Angara" development program was being conducted some steps were taken to improve the ecological safety of these missiles what, in its turn, cut down the expenses on necessary environmental measures in the launch area, reduced the risk to cause damage to the environment or third persons and increased the carrier's competitive positions on the world market as well.

The foreign companies that provide space services became interested in the "Angara" project. They don't only consider it as a strategic competitor but seek cooperation. The Russian-American ILS joint venture founded by Lockheed Martin, "Khrunichev" Center and RKK "Energiya" will deal with the "Angara" marketing. There are already some potential customers for the light "Angara" and the heavy one. The Russian state organizations also grow interested in the missile family.

In order to estimate the prospects of "Angara" on the foreign market of transport services it should be mentioned that in the near future this market most probably will be divided among the most powerful participants that are capable to offer carrier rocket families.
