Efficiency of Aerospace Industry

Now the military-industrial complex is said to be able to promote the economic growth of our economy. It is very arguable thesis because, firstly, this complex is functionally designed to fulfill specific government defense tasks and, secondly, it is based on the achievements of major economic branches and applied sciences that can exist without their "defense" support.

Despite the increasing role of electronics the aerospace industry remains the main part of the MIC activity. It's usually associated with the term "scientific and technical progress". In the end of the 90's the US aerospace industry was reported to be in crisis caused by failures of commercial launches, low product quality and market capitalization. Since the end of the cold war it became clear that the managers of the American aerospace industry for the first time faced the major problem of the private companies related to financing and products sales. The reforms conducted by the Democratic administration consolidated the prime Defense Ministry contractors and scrapped the superfluous production facilities. The continuing consolidation of the subcontractors can be considered as the second stage of this "emergency" reform.

But according to some experts the aerospace companies are too much concerned about how to survive at the recurring crisis instead of concentrating on production expenses reduction. The experts suggest that all components of company's activity should be integrated in one production line to reduce production time, number of required equipment and at last final product cost. In the USA this strategy called the "lean-conception" were widely used by the major aerospace companies. Besides the representatives of other branches advise the aerospace industry managers to apply more aggressively commercial practice to stimulate technological renovation.

But the majority of the aerospace companies doubt that it will be possible to ignore the specific conditions their companies operate under. They are determined by the importance of the governmental tasks these companies fulfill. The degree of this importance changes according to the international climate. When the international situation becomes aggravated the aerospace industry abandons its activity on the free market. The transition from one function mode to another can't be painless for the aerospace industry. The example of the post-cold war American aerospace companies showed how serious the transition cost could be even if its strategy was carefully considered.
