RUSSIAN AVIATION INDUISTRY CAUGHT BETWEEN EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES. REFUSAL TO BUY AMERICAN AERONAUTICS HARDWARE AS A MEASURE DESIGNED TO COUNTER WASHINGTON'S POLICIES
The situation in the Russian aviation industry testifies to the fact that, given the most optimistic development scenario, Russia could act as system integrator of civil aviation projects in implementation of one, maximum two programs. Claims for implementation of such programs have already been put forward. SUKHOI Corp. in broad cooperation with European companies is busy developing the Russian Regional Jet (RRJ) Project. A group of design bureaus headed by OKB YAKOVLEV commenced development work on MS-21 single aisle aircraft. However, even in case those two projects highly risky at present are successful (their commercial future would heavily depend on international cooperation) their implementation could only ensure a comparatively modest presence in the market. Therefore, while sparing all the possible efforts to implement the RRJ and MS-21 programs, we should also strive for integration into the international aviation industry.
